Story of the strange friendship between Ramdin, a god-fearing Havaldar in a jail and Khan a criminal. Khan, takes advantage of Ramdin’s friendship escapes from the jail. Ramdin’s sister, Shanti gave him few loaves & told him to feed it to the robber. He tells Shanti that he never sympathize on theives & robber, he also swears such lies in the name of Lord Rama went to his duty at jail. He screams at the prisoners the whole day. One day Khan, the notorious goonda is brought to the jail. Khan tells his mother to tell him how much milk she fed him in his childhood & also how much rupees does he owe her, so that he can repay back. Ramdin could not tolerate and abused Khan by saying that Khan’s mother had sheltered a devil in her belly for nine months, & person like him should be sentenced to death. Ramdin went away, but Khan was stunned. No one had ever before spoken to him like that. After that Khan changed, he never believed in any religion, began to pray five times a day. He also started apologising to everyone, with whom he had misbehaved in the past. Day and night he regreted for the way he had lived his life. He knows he will be hanged soon, but he wants to die with a clear conscience and clean heart. It was a miracle that a savage like Khan had been reformed. The jailor sent for Ramdin and congratulated him for this transformation in Khan, promising that Ramdin would now be promoted from a havaldar to a Subedar. Instead of feeling pleased, Ramdin burst into tears saying that he doesn’t deserve this & also ask for the hardest possible punishment as he has done the biggest mistake in his life by aiming to be Khan’s friend and trying to reform him. This is the story for the world’s strangest friendship, the friendship between a Havaldar and a “Khan Dost.”
