Hindustan was partitioned into India and Pakistan. Most of the Hindus reach the safe confines of the border of India, except for some. Shanti’s bridal mehndi has barely dried, when she is separated from her husband, her in-laws, her parents and siblings. She is bereft of their love. Feeling suffocated in the confines of her house, she one day sets out to search for her husband. But some people bent upon mischief start following her. Shanti screams when she sees a door opening. But she is assured when she hears Abdulrehman saying “Sister, cover your face”. If man can turn into an animal or the very devil himself, he can also become godly. A goonda and criminal like Abdulrehman becomes Shanti’s source of comfort. She has become a sister to a man who has never seen her face. He recognizes her only by her voice, like lakshman in the Ramayans. Five years later, Shanti reaches a refugee camp in Delhi. Her parents, in -laws, her brothers refuse to recognize her. Her husband comes to the camp. Shanti shows her children to him as a sign of their love. But her husband doubts her fidelity, and accuses her of being unfaithful and drives her away. Shanti’s life again slips into darkness, and desolates, she decides to end her life. Chhalia saves her. Her maternal instincts springing to the fore, Shanti returns to the camp for her children. But her children have already left the camp in search of their mother. On not finding her children Shanti becomes depressed. Chhalia brings her to stay with him in his hut.

Gradually Chhalia falls in love with Shanti, but is tongue tied to express his feelings. He keeps telling Shanti that he loves a girl. Shanti is eager to meet the girl. But Chhalia lightly keeps promising her that she would meet her sometime.
